What is ISO 22002-100:2025 – Prerequisite programmes on food safety?

ISO 22002-100:2025 sets out the common prerequisite programme (PRP) requirements for food safety across the entire food, feed and packaging supply chain. It unifies essential hygiene and safety practices that organizations must implement as part of their food safety management system (FSMS) in line with ISO 22000:2018.

Rather than duplicating sector-specific PRP standards like ISO 22002-1 (Food manufacturing) or ISO 22002-4 (Packaging), ISO 22002-100 consolidates the shared PRPs from these into one foundational document. It simplifies compliance for organizations working across multiple sectors.

Why is ISO 22002-100 important for food safety?

Food safety hazards can emerge at any point in the supply chain—from raw material handling to packaging and retail. ISO 22002-100 provides the baseline practices that help prevent contamination, ensure hygiene, and establish safe operating conditions across diverse activities.

It also provides a harmonized structure that enhances coherence, consistency, and transparency when implementing or auditing PRPs across sectors. This is especially useful for organizations with complex or cross-sector operations.

Benefits

  • Harmonized PRPs across food, feed and packaging sectors
  • Streamlined compliance with ISO 22000:2018 requirements
  • Simplifies implementation for multisector organizations
  • Reduces duplication and increases audit efficiency
  •  Supports safe design and operational control across supply chain stages

FAQ

ISO 22002-100 consolidates the common PRPs found in sector-specific parts of the ISO 22002 series (like ISO 22002-1, -2, -4, etc.). It is meant to be used in conjunction with these sector-specific parts for a complete food safety programme. Some sectors (like trading or services) don’t require additional PRPs, while others (e.g. food manufacturing or catering) do.

Any organization working in the food, feed or packaging supply chain—from raw material handling and food manufacturing to transport, storage, retail and more—can use ISO 22002-100. It applies to both plano and complex operations, and is especially valuable for companies operating across multiple sectors.

While not mandatory by itself, ISO 22002-100 supports compliance with Clause 8.2 of ISO 22000:2018, which requires the implementation of PRPs. For certification to ISO 22000, organizations typically need to demonstrate how their PRPs meet the standard—ISO 22002-100 provides a harmonized and auditable way to do this.
