What is ISO Open Consultation?
ISO Open Consultation is a newly created mechanism that helps ISO capture opportunities in emerging, innovative sectors and industries. Convening stakeholders from outside of the standardization community, Open Consultation enables ISO to consider its strategic entry point into new fields.
Without having to invest in multi-year commitments to specific technical work before identifying if there is a genuine need, Open Consultation is a focused approach to defining stakeholder expectations.
How does it work?
The purpose of ISO Open Consultation is to enable ideas generated through national consultation to be fed directly into the ISO system to determine potential for standardization. The outcomes would be submitted to ISO Council and Technical Management Board to determine further action.
Similar to an ISO technical committee, the process is global-reaching, but is chaired and led by one of ISO Members. They provide the discussion framework and help other Members gather and consolidate inputs.
To learn more about how to participate in the process and feed into the future of standardization, see the resources provided for the current ongoing ISO Open Consultations:
- Led by DIN, Germany – Resource-efficient software
- Led by KATS, Republic of Korea – Positioning, navigation and timing services
ISO Open Consultation complements other ISO processes. If you want to learn more about ongoing technical work, see the list of all ISO technical committees.
