In the May/June 2015 issue of ISOfocus, we hone in on innovation. We point out some examples of technologies and concepts that originated in science-fiction, but can now be found in everyday life. From drones to additive manufacturing or nanotechnologies, standards are being developed to help develop solutions. It is from these solutions that advanced technologies continue to thrive to create efficiencies and simplify our worlds.

In his opening comment, ANSI President and CEO S. Joe Bhatia stresses how innovation is the fuel of economic engines, and standards and conformance are a critical element of the formula. “Consensus standards provide a solid and reliable foundation of broad-based knowledge that allows for creative innovation to grow,” he says. “Research and development costs are lower when tried-and-true, standardized methodologies serve as the launching point for technological advancements.”

“By codifying and widely disseminating best practices, standards promote efficiency throughout global supply chains, and can reduce time to market. Whether industries are firmly established or growing into an emerging sector, standards provide a strong infrastructure for subsequent generations of innovation.”

Innovation… What does it mean? How do you inspire it? And which innovations are poised to make the biggest impact? We spoke to some of today's most important industry leaders and asked them to share the innovations they're most excited about.

From drones to additive manufacturing, these companies are putting money and brain power into creating innovative solutions to their most pressing problems. It makes sense given the challenges companies face – tight budgets, increased trade pressures, and higher consumer expectations. But there’s something beyond that happening, too. Enterprises at every level are increasingly thinking of innovation as a process. And, increasingly, that process involves standards as an essential tool they wouldn’t want to be without.

Where can you break moulds and shape the future? We hope this gives you inspiration, insight, and some new ideas of your own.
