SSB was officially established on 15 October 2007. The Bureau is legally mandated by the Act on the Suriname Standards Bureau.

The Bureau is functioning as the National Institute for Standards and Technical Regulations, National Institute for Certification of Goods and Accepted Processes, National Institute for Metrology, and National Institute for Accreditation of Laboratories and Testing Facilities.

SSB is also legally mandated for the enforcement of the Standards Act.
