Complex production processes, high pressure for innovations, the dynamic market and high quality requirements are important drivers for integrated information flows in semiconductor production. In order to reach the required level of integration in spite of a large variety of equipment and software suppliers, there is a clear need for standardization in the shop floor IT area. This paper gives an overview on standardization activities and describes potentials and limitations of the standardization of shop floor IT based on a set of examples.
