ISO has published a CD-ROM collection of 41 International Standards and related documents on surface chemical analysis, which is used extensively in many technologies for the characterization and development of advanced materials and processes.

This collection brings together the 34 standards, six technical reports and one technical specification so far developed by ISO technical committee ISO/TC 201, Surface chemical analysis. The committee’s work finds application in areas such as the following: polymers, ceramics, metallurgy, composites, adhesion, tribology, wear, corrosion, thin films and coatings, implant materials, catalysis, microelectronics and superconductors.

The Secretary of ISO/TC 201, Hidehiko Nonaka, comments: "Surface chemical analysis is known to be a powerful tool for R&D in many fields. However, it should be properly applied to get correct results. This new ISO CD-ROM will help the users of surface chemical analysis by providing a lot of essential information contained in the standards."

The new CD includes standards for the following analytical techniques:

  • Auger electron spectroscopy (AES)
  • Glow discharge spectrometry (GDS)
  • Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS)
  • Total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF)
  • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)
  • Sputter depth profiling by techniques such as AES, SIMS, and XPS.

In addition, it includes: a vocabulary of terms used in surface chemical analysis; standards for specimen handling (both prior to analysis and for analysis); data transfer formats; data information formats, and standards for specific materials or classes of materials. Finally, ISO technical reports are included that provide summaries of knowledge in particular areas that were prepared to guide the later development of standards.

ISO/TC 201 is currently developing new standards on atomic force microscopy (AFM), near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM or SNOM), and X-ray reflectometry (XRR). Information on its work programme can be found on the ISO Website.
