This teaching module deals with the standardization policy of the European Union and the basic characteristics of the European Standardization System (ESS). This is performed in three steps: firstly, an account is given of the build-up of European standardization structures and the development of EU standardization policies. Secondly, the basic characteristics of the ESS are dealt with. Thirdly, present issues and possible future developments in European standardization are considered. It is shown that both the ESS and the standards it produces play an important role in one of the most prominent EU projects, the creation of the `Internal Market¿. It is also shown that, although the present EU regime ¿ the so-called ¿New Approach¿ ¿ is widely regarded as a success by EU organs, some problems still persist while others may show up in the future.
