This module deals with the European Union (EU), its institutional attributes, procedures and policies. This subject matter has been selected for the following reasons: The EU not only sets the political framework for the European Standardization System, but also employs it as a policy instrument to complete the Internal Market. A sound knowledge of those attributes of the EU which have an impact on standardization issues is therefore helpful in order to understand the European Standardization System. Chapter 3.1 provides a short history of the EU. Chapter 3.2 outlines the institutional status quo of the EU. In Chapter 3.3, current and future policy issues and problems are addressed, such as the European Constitution, which is presently going through the ratification process. Concluding remarks are made in Chapter 4.
