COMMENT - (not answered during the workshop) L. Jachia, UNECE
The UNECE Working Party on Regulatory Cooperation and Standardization Policies is also – since 2002 – an important Forum for matters related to Market Surveillance. The meetings of the Advisory Group on Market Surveillance" ("MARS" Group) of UNECE bring together market surveillance authorities from developing countries, countries in transition and developed countries, as well as representatives of private sector associations and private firms. Among the achievements of the MARS Group is the adoption in 2007 of the Recommendation M referenced above. The Group is currently developing a General Market Surveillance Procedure, a general model for supporting the decision making process of market surveillance authorities from planning market inspections to product recalls. This role is complementary to that of an Intergovernmental Organization – such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Working Party 6 – which can develop recommendations for governmental authorities on best practice to be followed, as well as ensure through training and awareness raising, that these recommendations are put to use in the countries that express this need.
