Nanotechnolgy

Click to enlargeNanotechnology is the science of engineering matter at the atomic and molecular scale, about 10 000 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair. The field is growing rapidly and the global nanotechnology market is expected to reach 29 billion USD by 2008.

Therefore ISO established a new technical committee ISO/TC 229, Nanotechnologies in late 2005,which is hosted by the ISO member for the United Kingdom, the British Standards Institute, to develop International Standards for nanotechnologies. Future tasks and the initial structure for the work include developing standards for:

  • Terminology and nomenclature
  • Metrology and instrumentation
  • Test methodologies
  • Modeling and simulation
  • Science-based health
  • Safety
  • Environmental practices
