Get ready, set, go! - Managing disruptions in emergency situations
Effective responses to a frequently wide range of disruption-related risks require a concerted approach to the management of emergency preparedness.

With the recent earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, IT attacks and terrorist threats around the world, ISO has dedicated the May 2012 issue of ISO Focus+ to crises management. It shows how International Standards protect and support stakeholders involved in all types of disaster situations.
Managing the aftermath of these crises is a herculean task but emergency preparedness is the key to limiting the toll that must be paid. From the safe maintenance of nuclear reactors and managing risk to IT preparedness for business continuity and disaster recovery, ISO standards are valuable, capacity-building tools in handling incident response in any crisis.
This issue of ISO Focus+ features an exclusive interview with Jim Ingram, CEO of Medair, a non-governmental organization that brings life-saving relief and rehabilitation in disasters, conflict areas, and other crises by working alongside the most vulnerable. He highlights how Medair made a strategic decision to demonstrate a commitment to quality using ISO standards:
“We need clearly to established processes and emergency protocols in place across Medair to be able to execute rapidly once we make the decision to intervene. Here again International Standards, provide a framework for having in place the processes and protocols we need to execute with quality to deliver aid to our beneficiaries.”

Cloud computing – the delivery of computation, software applications, data access, management and storage resources “from the cloud”, i.e from infrastructure at a remote location, has grown into a multi-billion euro market since its birth in 2007.
Between September 2010 and December 2011, a series of powerful earthquakes wreaked devastation in New Zealand’s Canterbury region, particularly in Christchurch. What has been the country’s response and what role can standards play in the face of natural disasters ?
