Child related products
COPOLCO coordinates the work by consumer representatives on many technical committees that design products for children, especially for household use. These products include playpens, folding cots, and high chairs along with wheeled conveyances (prams, strollers, pushchairs). There are special considerations for the design of children's products, making stringent requirements for safety and fitness for purpose all the more necessary. For toy safety, COPOLCO is supporting the international harmonization of guidelines for the design and manufacture of toys that meet children's needs for safety.
A great number of standards have been developed to promote child safety outside the home as well: examples include car seats and protective headgear. Sports and leisure makes up one major area, encompassing safe design of playgrounds and sports equipment. Special features have been added, through additional requirements in standards, to items that may be dangerous if handled by children, such as utility lighters, and child-resistant packaging for hazardous products.
For generic guidelines, COPOLCO has contributed to the development of ISO/IEC Guide 51, Safety aspects -- Guidelines for child safety.
