ISO Focus – June 2008
Mechanical innovation
The relationship between humans and mechanics goes back to the earliest civilizations, and mechanical innovations continue to play a pivotal role in people’s life today.
International standardization facilitates the dissemination of technological advances and mechanical innovations, making an enormous contribution to our safety, health and the quality of life that many of us take for granted.
June’s ISO Focus explores the field of mechanical innovations and international standardization. It gives an insight into the latest developments of some of the oldest established ISO committees and spotlights some of the newest.
The issue includes articles, with some surprising stories, on innovations in welding, cutting tools, springs, high level safety devices against excessive pressure, testing methods for reliable mechanical property data and gas turbines for power generation – areas, which cut across all sectors and spheres of activity.
June’s “view from the top” comes from Dr. Siegfried Dais, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of Robert Bosch GmbH. Dr. Dais discusses the role that standards play in Bosch’s activities, and the advantages which international standards bring to the company. “We welcome standards that give people, the environment, and market participants a real benefit,” he says.
