ISO Focus - September 2007
Standards and the citizen: Contributing to society
Standards make an enormous contribution to most aspects of our lives. Without standards, consider how difficult –or even dangerous – it would be to carry out ordinary, daily tasks.
The September 2007 ISO Focus issue, devoted to “Standards and the citizen: contributing to society” – the theme for World Standards Day 2007 – looks at the importance of International Standards in our everyday lives. A portfolio of articles examines how International Standards open up markets, while bringing environmental protection, safety, security, health and access to information and knowledge.
What's more, Doris Leuthard, Swiss Minister of Economy, highlights the benefits of International Standards, particularly their positive effects on innovation. "Actually, international standards serve as a bridge between an invention and its practical application on an industrial basis. Standards serve as a positive stimulus for innovation. The spread of innovation through the application of standards takes on particular importance in the information society."
