The intelligent car

ISO Focus March 2006 ISO Focus, March 2007

The March issue of ISO Focus is all about how standards can support the networked car and intelligent transport systems (ITS). ITS refers to the integration and application of information technology to vehicles and transport networks enabling both governments and industry to improve safety and help mitigate traffic congestion, in addition to reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

As part of the global cooperation on ITS, ISO, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) are jointly organizing a workshop and exhibition: The Fully Networked Car on Information and Communications Technologies in motor vehicles, 6-10 March, during the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. The workshop will demonstrate the importance of standards to vehicle safety, fuel efficiency and emissions reduction and the importance of standards to transport systems.

Providing insight into the practical application of standards to the automotive industry, Mr. Yann Vincent, Senior Vice President, Quality, Renault contributes the Guest View looking at industry collaboration with ISO on the development of vehicle and ITS standards. Mr. Vincent presents Renault’s vision of the future using intelligent transport systems, as well as the application of quality and environmental management systems standards to Renault’s operations.

In a global environment, standardizing the architecture for the ITS technologies provides a common framework for developing and integrating ITS systems. Personal and public safety are among the most important benefits of ITS with secure communications between infrastructure and vehicles enabling advanced warning systems to help drivers avoid accidents and allow the safe transport of freight.

ITS systems can provide significant benefits for developing countries, which often face traffic problems when automobile ownership increases with prosperity and rapid urbanization.

In a portfolio of 10 articles, the March edition of ISO Focus features the work of two ISO Technical Committees, ISO/TC 22, Road Vehicles and ISO/TC 204, Intelligent Transport Systems. Rapidly evolving technology as well as an increasing public interest for the safety and environmental performance of road transport provides a continuous momentum for the hundreds of standards elaborated by these two committees. Get your copy now to find out more about the exciting possibilities provided by these new technologies.
