Shipbuilding
Why does the work matter?
The importance of international standardization for the shipbuilding industry was recognized right at the outset, since ISO/TC 8 (ISO’s technical committee for Ships and marine technology) was set up in 1947, the year that ISO became operational.
Recently, growing concerns for the protection of the environment and global security are influencing the type of standards developed by ISO/TC 8. For example, standards for the construction of twin hulls were developed and published as a result of the damage caused by oil tanker shipwrecks. More recently, security in the supply chain has also been addressed by ISO/TC 8, and has already led to the publication of ISO/PAS 28000:2005 - Specification for security management systems for the supply chain.
In the field of navigation, technological advancements in navigation systems are shaping the range of standards offered by ISO.
