ISO's engagement

Who does what?

There are three main ISO technical committees active in the field of oil and gas:

ISO/TC 28, Petroleum products and lubricants

ISO/TC 28, Petroleum products and lubricants has the responsibility for establishing standards for many different types of petroleum products and lubricants – whose overall worldwide industry production is estimated to be around USD 100 to USD 150 billion. ISO/TC 28 standards form the basis of, or are referenced in, national or regional regulations and legislation on, for example, shipping, storage, handling and safety of petroleum products and lubricants. They are also used in custody transfer (the process by which a quantity of petroleum that is transferred between parties actually changes ownership) for determining the quantity and quality of the product being transferred.

TC Scope:
Standardization of terminology, classification, specifications, methods of sampling, measurement, analysis and testing for:

  • Petroleum
  • Petroleum products
  • Petroleum based lubricants and hydraulic fluids
  • Non-petroleum based liquid fuels
  • Non-petroleum based lubricants and hydraulic fluids.

ISO/TC 67, Materials, equipment and offshore structures for petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries

ISO/TC 67 has the responsibility of establishing standards for most capital equipment used in all streams of the oil business. This is the hardware portion of the equipment used for exploration, production, transportation, and processing of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons within the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries, and refining of crude oil or natural gas products. The overall industry investment in materials and equipment is estimated to be around USD 150 to USD 200 billion (million-million U.S. dollars) annually. The provision of consensus standards eliminates duplicate and triplicate work by all interested parties. Company specifications are reduced, manufacturing and inventory costs are minimized, and regulatory authorities are incorporating these standards by reference rather than restating in regulations.

TC Scope:
Standardization of the materials, equipment and offshore structures used in the drilling, production, transport by pipelines and processing of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons within the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries.

Excluded:
- aspects of offshore structures subject to IMO requirements (ISO / TC 8).

ISO/TC 193, Natural gas

ISO/TC 193 develops international standards for natural gas and natural gas substitutes (gaseous fuels) in all its facets from production to delivery to all possible end users across national boundaries. These standards are supporting tools for delivery contracts between exploration companies, transportation companies, trading companies, distribution companies and industrial and individual end users. Instead of negotiating natural gas quality and measurement methods for each contrct, easy rference to international standards can be made. Also they serve as supporting tool for regulations in the field of natural gas.

TC Scope:
Standardization of terminology, quality specifications, methods of measurement, sampling, analysis and test for natural gas and natural gas substitutes (gaseous fuel), in all its facets from production to delivery to all possible end users across national boundaries.

Management standards

In addition to the technical standards published by ISO/TC 28, ISO/TC 67 and ISO/TC 193, the oil and gas industry makes an extensive use of ISO’s management system standards for quality management (ISO 9001:2008 and its specific version for the oil and gas sector, ISO/TS 29001:2010) and for environmental management (ISO 14001:2004), as well as the ISO standards for conformity assessment.
