Great inventions, such as the printing press, the automobile or the Internet, have radically transformed human life throughout history. But for such innovations to take hold, International Standards are a must!

The November 2010 issue of ISO Focus+ opens up a world of new technologies and looks at the enabling role of ISO standards.

ISO standards bring together best practice from around the world, which improves communication between scientists and speeds up progress. They disseminate state-of-the-art knowledge to developed and developing countries, ensuring that all can share in the benefits. By promoting interoperability and opening up markets, ISO standards facilitate the uptake of new technologies.

The November issue highlights some exciting new areas where ISO is developing standards. From smart charging of electric vehicles, to stir friction welding and laser sintering for plastic. The issue looks at innovate developments for tackling space debris and the disposal of satellites, as well as standards for oil skimmers an oil collection, particularly timely given the most recent spills. You can read about International Standards that are opening up markets for hydrogen energy, as well as for nanotechnologies and IT.

The issue features an exclusive interview with Prof. Øystein Fischer recipient of the Tage Erlander professorship for his groundbreaking work on superconductivity, who says "Innovation can truly benefit from standards in that it can reach out more quickly and easily to industrial technological markets."

A full report of the ISO 33rd General Assembly which took place in Oslo, Norway in September 2010 is also included.
