Relevance of ISO network to global challenges highlighted at Davos
The “shifting power equation” was the central theme of this year’s annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, 24-28 January, Davos, Switzerland. The meeting attracts more than 1 000 industry and economic leaders joined by as many key players from political, academic and societal institutions.
In this context, ISO, which was represented by its Secretary-General Alan Bryden, was able to highlight some current developments which can contribute to addressing these global challenges.
Jury for ISO Award for Higher Education in Standardization announced
ISO has named the high-level selection committee for its newly created award to encourage and recognize successful programmes in higher education on standardization. The ISO Award selection committee consists of eminent international personalities from academia, the economic sphere and the media.
New edition available of ISO's collection of freight container standards

ISO International Standards for freight containers have allowed "the box" to become the backbone of global supply chains. The organization has just issued a new collection of these ISO standards that have facilitated the expansion of the freight transport sector over the last 30 years, with more than 13 million freight containers in service around the world. To date, over 30 International Standards exist in this domain. The handbook includes the new ISO standards for 45-feet containers, as well as those for 20 and 40 feet. It covers standards for special containers such as tank containers for liquids, gases, non-pressurized dry bulk and pressurized dry bulk, and thermal containers.

Special Report: QMS and product quality

Customers don’t buy quality systems, they buy products and services. So the real test of a quality management system (QMS) is the extent to which it leads to the product the customer wants. The author of this article proposes elements of a solution to bridge the gap he sees between the QMS and product quality. The fact that customers wish to buy products and services that comply with the required quality, combined with the parallel need to improve the credibility of the QMS certifications, should provide a strong incentive to bridge the gap presently existing between QMS and product quality. Despite current trends that are often oriented too much towards the systemic concepts of a QMS, the gap can be closed by emphasizing the production processes that are fundamental to product and service quality. In this way, the degree of customer satisfaction would really become a measure of QMS performance.
