Food products - New challenges for consumer safety

More and more consumers are buying their goods online and relying on label claims to make purchasing decisions. These are two of the major trends standards need to address to ensure consumer safety, argue consumer representatives.

These and other topics, including innovation in production technologies together with global supply chains, were discussed at a workshop organized by ISO focusing on consumer safety and food products, held in Malta, in May 2013.

More than 100 representatives from consumer organizations, public authorities and industry from over 30 countries attended the meeting to share their ideas on how International Standards can protect consumers in a changing world.

Workshops like this one are held annually by the ISO committee on consumer policy (ISO/COPOLCO). Bringing together consumer representatives from around the world, they are an important way to inform the standardization community about the needs of consumers and how standards can help in the future.

The workshop was opened by Dr Helena Dalli, Malta's Minister for Social Dialogue Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties, who highilghted the importance of consumer education on their rights.

"Consumer protection is at the heart of the new government. We are committed to promote and raise awareness of the rights and obligations of consumers, to educate them to make the right choices, and to empower them to take action when their rights are not respected. Regarding consumer education, this has to start from an early age, at the first years of schooling."
