The Slovak Standards Institute (SUTN) was established in 1993 for development, approval and publication of Slovak National Standards (STN). According to Act No. 264/1999 Coll. on Technical requirements on products and on conformity assessment and on the change and amendments of other Acts in the wording of 436/2001 Coll. SUTN was desiganted as the National Standardization Body as of 1 January 2000. SUTN is the national member of CEN, CENELEC, ISO, and IEC and NSB for ETSI.

On 1 January 1999, the status of SUTN changed to that of a state subsidiary organization. In 2004 SUTN was certified according to ISO 9001: 2000 by certification bodies CQS and CERTICOM. Currently SUTN is in a process of preparation for certification according to new ISO 9001:2008.

SUTN also performs the function of National Information Centre competent for providing information regarding standards: all national standards STN, all international standards ISO and IEC, national standards of other countries are at disposal to customers in paper or electronic form.

In 2008 SUTN offered to customers new service STN-online with DRM (Digital Rights Management) security allowing them to access STN standards through web in electronic format with reading or printing option according to their needs. Through Internet Shop customers may also buy standards in electronic or paper version with possibility to pay by credit cards.

SUTN signed an agreement with Austrian Standards Institute (ASI). The agreement specifies the conditions for cooperation between the Slovak Standards Institute and the Austrian Standards Institute on behalf of the Language Industry Certification System in order to implement and market the LICS certification scheme for translation service providers in Slovakia.

SUTN has established 98 National Technical Committees where 1 450 experts work.
