COPOLCO

ISO’s Committee on Consumer Policy (COPOLCO) is responsible for promoting consumer interests in standardization.

COPOLCO membership

COPOLCO membership is open to member bodies as participating (P) or observer (O) members, and to correspondent members as observer (O) members. Members of COPOLCO designate a person responsible for consumer liaison. This person usually comes from the ISO member but may also come from a member-appointed consumer association.

Related Organizations

COPOLCO works with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which produces standards for electrical consumer goods, to develop ISO/IEC guides relating to consumer issues in the development of standards.

COPOLCO also has a liaison with Consumers International (CI) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as well as cooperating with a number of regional consumer organizations.

COPOLCO terms of reference

To study means of helping consumers to benefit from standardization, and means of improving consumer participation in national and international standardization.

To provide a forum for the exchange of information on the experience of consumer participation in the development and implementation of standards in the consumer field, and on other questions of interest to consumers in national and international standardization.

To advise ISO Council as to the consolidated viewpoints of consumers on matters relevant to ISO's current and potential standardization and conformity assessment work.

To advise ISO Council on the need for new or revised policies or actions within ISO as they relate to consumers' needs.

COPOLCO supports and contributes to the goals for stakeholder input as expressed in the ISO Code of Ethics and the ISO Strategic Plan.
