New ISO technical specification to green civil engineering works

With building projects such as roads, bridges, canals and dams, civil engineering works are a feature of our landscape, leaving a trail of woes behind them. Yet if the construction industry is responsible for a large amount of waste and general pollution, it is also well known as the largest industrial employer. That's why, as a key driver in national economies, the building sector has the capacity to propose solutions that will contribute to sustainable development.

From robots to drones: innovation needs #hitechstandards!

New technologies are pushing the boundaries of what we thought possible: from the first 3D printed car to robots that can detect your mood to the latest holo glasses. Some innovations can change lives, like the robot legs that help people to walk again or 3D printed organs, but without International Standards it would be extremely difficult and slow to make these readily accessible. From 22-26 June, the global standards community is driving #hitechstandards, a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of standards for new technologies.

Hi-tech heats up

Innovation… What does it mean? How do you inspire it? And which innovations are poised to make the biggest impact? What was sci-fi yesterday is reality today, as innovations we once saw only in movies have become commonplace technology.

In the May/June 2015 issue of ISOfocus, we hone in on innovation. We point out some examples of technologies and concepts that originated in science-fiction, but can now be found in everyday life. From drones to additive manufacturing or nanotechnologies, standards are being developed to help develop solutions. It is from these solutions that advanced technologies continue to thrive to create efficiencies and simplify our worlds.
