Forum for Sustainability of the Planet in Stockholm
Daniel Gagnier, Vice President of Alcan and Chair of ISO technical committee ISO/TC 207, Environmental management, has taken the initiative together with the Swedish Industry Association (Sinf), to organize an international Forum and workshops on Sustainability of the Planet – issues. Incentives and tools for sustainability in the supply chain, 3 to 4 October, 2006 in Stockholm, Sweden.
The aim of the Forum is to draw more attention to sustainable development, such as environmental and social issues, and enable stakeholders to influence the design and content of future activities that need to be undertaken. It is a unique partnership between organizations working with sustainability issues, aiming to establish a long-term programme initiated by this international forum and workshops. The content of future activities will include:
- how to use and handle the strategic global resources while avoiding depletion by 2050
- how to make the business case for a sustainable future, and
- the future of a sustainable world
As a starting point, the forum will use the Club of Rome’s “Limits to growth” report as presented at Stockholm in 1972, and “Our Common Future” (Brundtland Report) from 1987, “Beyond the limits” from 1992 and “Limits to growth – The 30 years update” from 2002.
Representatives from industry, small and medium-sized enterprises, governments and non-governmental organizations are expected to attend.
ISO Secretary-General Alan Bryden, together with many other high level professionals from organizations working with sustainability issues, will participate in the Forum discussions. The event is sponsored by Alcan (Global manufacturers of primary aluminum and packaging materials based in Canada) and ABB (a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact).
